If we’re lucky, we never have to encounter the deep level of hate harbored by someone like James von Brunn. Long before his alleged act of violence at the Holocaust Museum, he made no secret of his grudge against Jews and blacks. He was so obsessed in his racism, his ex-wife left him years ago because it consumed his life. He is, it seems, the pure definition of extremist.
The FBI has set out to learn what provoked von Brunn at this particular moment.
It may provide useful clues, not just to what happened at the U.S. Holocaust Museum, but to what might be brewing among other hate groups.
It’s hard to ignore that the museum shooting happened within two weeks of the murder of
George Tiller, the Kansas doctor who performed late term abortions. Tiller had long been the target of protest. But only now did deadly violence prevail.
Hate is nothing new. But what tips it to something beyond words? Who’s most likely to allow their beliefs to form the intent to harm someone else? And, who among us is so intolerant, so prejudiced, that violence is possible?
People with this amount of hatred really scare me. This may sound strange but I almost feel sorry for them. Not because I think they can’t control their actions but because in most cases, someone taught them to be that way. Someone allowed them to think these feelings were right and/or okay. It scares me becuase if we still have adults that hate people of other races and religions, they will continue to raise children with those same beliefs. Some of those children may choose to change their beliefs as they grow older but unfortunately, some will not. I would love to be able to believe that one day we will live in a world (or even a country) where racism and other forms of extreme hatred do not exist but I’m not sure I can. I think it’s unfortunate that some people will miss out on wonderful relationships with people they hate without even knowing them.
That nut case was probably off his medicine! I’m not kidding! When our seniors medicine flow is cut for whatever reason, bad things can happen. Guns always never mix with bad medicine, booze, hate, etc.
Don’t Germans hate jews all the time? I mean, my dad flew in planes in WWII and dropped bombs on them! Maybe we dropped the ‘two big bombs’ on the wrong cities?

Back in the early 80’s I was a young newlywed living in Easton. My husband worked at Easton Memorial and I scraped a living selling office equipment. I will never forget an encounter I had with a man who made my hair stand on the nape of my neck with the vile hatred he spouted about Blacks. I was truly frightnened and sickened that I encountered someone like this as I was trying to sell copiers. I will never forget that man and looking at the pictures of James von Brunn I realized I was staring into those same evil eyes–a monster.
